How I tripped into hosting/commentating in the world of endurance sports . True Story ! I was developing my first business in Charlotte, NC in 1997. Part of my education about endurance sports was working partime as a lifeguard at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club and managing a large bike shop called bicycles south .
In 1998 the CEO of a locally syndicated radio show based in Charlotte came into the shop. It was mentioned that I was coming out to California to race at the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon . The guys in the shop had a video running that showed the previous years race .
The radio show called the shop the next day and asked if I would come be on the show to talk about this triathlon in San Francisco . I went on the show and they proposed sponsoring me and calling into the show from San Francisco.
Next thing you know I am on the show reguarly talking about all the different endurance sport events I was competing . I asked if they could start including interviews with some of the top professional athletes in triathlon , mountain biking , cycling etc. So I coordinated the interviews and did the prep work prior to each show , radio prep 101.
Next a large triathlon event management company from the west coast was going to put on a off road triathlon in Charlotte and I got involved with getting some media attention and race in this 3 day event that included a mountain bike time trial , mountain bike triathlon , and mountain bike duathlon . I broke my foot during the triathlon on the 2nd day . They asked if I might be interested in announcing at the events final day. I showed up on crutches and did just that .
The owner asked if I might be interested in flying out to California and announcing at the National Championship that would be held near San Luis Obispo , CA . So I did . I was then asked to co-announce at the ITU worlds for duathlon being held near Charlotte when I returned , so I did . I was then invited to come out to Hawaii and would I be interested in working with the primary announcer they used that also announced at the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship . I was already going to be racing at the Xterra Off Road Triathlon in Maui , So I went to Kona and worked with the crew at Ironman .
Currently I have hosted/commentated from North Carolina to Hawaii at over 250 events since 1998 * World Championships -National Championships -Ocean Racing etc. . This provided an opportunity for me to do work with TV, Radio, Media , PR , webcast etc. Currently I host/MC about 15 endurance sport events a year in Central/Northern California .
